About ShadoWeb

What is ShadoWeb?

ShadoWeb is a discussion channel on top of any web site.

All web sites have a Shadow page, where you participate in conversations. You'll see the Shadow page when you click the ShadoWeb button on your browser. You get the button by installing the extension from the frontpage.

What is it good for?

You can have conversations about anything related to the site you are on:
  • Ask questions about their products or service
  • Find information about the company or product
  • Express your opinions without fear of censorship
  • Share reviews of products and services
  • Warn others of problems with that web site or company

How does it work?

Shadows, buddy. All 71 million of them. Each web site has one and exactly one Shadow. Yahoo.com got one. So does Microsoft.com. Shadow is like a site on top of another site. And in Shadow space, you may say anything you like about any of them. Ask questions. Post complaints. State your opinion. Anything. There is nobody to stop you.

Other than that, why is it cool?

Because it simply is convenient to access these conversations on the spot, while you browse the web. We realize it is not the wheel reinvented, but trust us, we like it.

Do I need the extension?

No, but you'll miss most of the fun. The extension adds a button for your browser, which smoothly opens and closes the Shadow for that site. Without the button, ShadoWeb operates more like a huge collection of forums.

The extension is very small and safe, adds only one button to your browser, and does nothing on it's own.

The story behind ShadoWeb

Shadoweb service is created and run by three Finnish guys, Jyrki, Markus and Sampo.

The idea was first thought of in May 2004 while drinking GTs. Finally in August 2006 we had enough spare time to turn the idea into a concrete plan. Since then everything has happened fast and we launched the friends-only beta in February 14th 2007.

What happened since is up to anyone's guess, as this is written at February 13th.

The vision is to create a service to bypass all attempts to censorship while bringing information where it belongs - next to related information.

About the site

This site uses modified icons from the FamFamFam Silk collection. Big up to Mark James!
